• 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kristina -- This edition of the book is dodgy : When I started reading this edition of the book I found myself wondering why I keep finding spelling mistakes and inconsistencies in the tense. At the beginning I thought that it was either just a mistake in the transcription, or that I was missing something essential in the writing style (i.e. that it was on purpose). This, however, began bothering me 5% in so I went through the 1 star reviews for it and found out that I am not the only person with this problem. One review had a great description "It's as though someone took the original and put it through google translate a few times". ( Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2019 )
• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Jason Adams -- Who is Mrs Dalloway? : Mrs. Dalloway is ostensibly about a woman planning and hosting a party for the upper class of London in the 1920s. However, it’s stream of consciousness narration is far more than that. Flipping points of view relentlessly, almost organically, through the streets and byways of a few districts in London the book captures the internal monologues of a cross section of society. By the end of the novel, we have seen “Mrs. Dalloway” through the eyes of her admirers and detractors, as well as the “Clarissa Dalloway” that is haunted by the choices of her past and the anxieties of her present and future. The fact that these two Dalloways bear very little connection to each other appears to call out a thesis that our understanding of each other is based less on reality than on our own ego and fears. I was so excited to take this book on vacation with me but it showed up today and is not a typical 4x6ish paperback, but this awkward 8x11 text-bookish manuscript...HATE IT! I wish you had done a better job stating the fact that it is GIANT and uncomfortable to hold! Perhaps you should consider putting the size in the actual title. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Cynthia K. McWilliams -- Stream of Consciousness/ Waste of Time : I found this book largely a waste of time. I was lured by a New Yorker review, indicating that it would be good pandemic reading because Mrs. Dalloway had had the flu. Hardly matters. If you like stream-of-consciousness and tales of the superficial upper classes, this is for you. The story and characters are entertaining enough, but the acres of needless descriptive rambling get in the way. Truthfully, I ended up skimming most of that, to find the story and characterization nuggets. I do not recommend this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2020 )

• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robert McDowell -- A PERFECT GENIUS : WOOLF wrote to a rhythm more than she wrote to a plot, and Mrs. Dalloway is a perfect example of her stellar method. Is there one sentence, one word, that is not perfect? I can't find or hear one, and I have now listened to this entire recital by the wonderful Annette Bening 14 times now. Yes, 14 times. I will listen 14 more times before this notice has been up a month. There are not enough superlatives to describe Virginia Woolf's genius and talent. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Mrs Tina Todd -- Not The Original! : I have read this book many times and noticed that the text is not the original but can find nothing to say that is the case. The first line immediately alerted me 'Mrs Dalloway said she might buy the plants herself' should read 'Mrs Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself.' Plants/flowers, might/would - why you may say make a fuss? Because the book was written by Virginia Woolf who wrote in a very particular, precise and poetic way. She should not be re-written. Found this version almost impossible to read, it just didn't make sense, seemed like random words had just been flung on the page. I eventually realised that this must be something to do with the digitisation (?). Had it been automised , or done by a computer or non- English speaker from a verbal recording instead of a written text? ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 15, 2019 )
• 2.0 out of 5 stars from Kellie Bird -- Not for me : I didn't finish this read. I have little to say about it. I found it fairly one dimensional, which is ironic, considering this is a novel studied by millions across the globe. The characters are suitably postmodern, giving little to know and less to like. The style of writing is wonderfully advanced given its time, however, Mrs. Dalloway herself is so unbelievably dull that I just can't bring myself to care about anything that she has to say. As I understand, the story improves in the latter half. Unfortunately, I have a short attention span for prose of this kind and if it doesn't grab my attention in the initial chapters it swiftly ends up on the 'half read' pile.
