I liked Arthur and his dry humor. The heist was hilarious especially once Ben got involved! The dog was my favorite character actually. His devotion to Jenny saved the day. A quick, fun read! His stories are lighthearted and easy to read. In some ways his writing reminds me of Monty Python. My son would love them. Albert decides he can no longer live with his aunt. In order to get his own place he must get a good paying job. Alastair, his friend, helps him get a job at the bank. Little does Albert know his friend has an ulterior motive for him to work there. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Moravian -- All about Ben : Don’t Bank on it Sweetheart was the third book of Michael Wilton’s that I have read and every bit as good as the other two, so an unhesitating five stars. On the surface the main character seems to be Arthur, the somewhat naïve banker, but that assessment would be incorrect. The second choice might be Jenny, the girlfriend – wrong! Then perhaps Alistair, the dodgy, smiling, charming chancer? No. How about the ex-SAS bank manager? Nope! Wrong again! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 18, 2020 )

The main character Arthur is a likeable, level headed person and a true gentleman. It is his interactions with the other characters that create tension and make this a lively and amusing read. There is a sly ambitious friend, a money grabbing landlady and a love interest who blows hot and cold. Throw in a couple of crooks led by an ex SAS bank manager and you have a fantastic read. Almost all of the other characters seem to have an ulterior motive and are involved in scheming and plotting which have implications on Arthur. Even the loveable, demanding dog Ben causes mayhem. Michael Wilton's strengths lie in creating interesting characters and a narrative which includes slap stick humorous moments and a series of misunderstandings which keep the readers interest. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Trypsin -- Trouble in the bank : It's been over a year since I first read 'In the Soup' by this author. I enjoyed that one, so I was overdue to pick up another. In this one, Arthur lands a job in the same bank branch as his old family friend, Alastair. It's set in post-war London in a bank branch and transports you back to the era very well. The plot contains a set of fascinating characters who each add a distinctive component to what is a rich tapestry. They work in a bank at a time when money was tight, so almost inevitably a bank heist crops up to drive the story. I was reminded of the bank scenes with Captain Mainwaring in 'Dad's Army'. The story unfolds with clever twists and turns, and good dollops of humour, which kept me turning the pages. Recommended. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 26, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bill -- Fun read! : This is a fun read, which has appeal for everyone but a particular appeal for someone like myself, who grew up in a time when we didn't have mobile phones or any electronic gadgets. The descriptions of the characters and everyday life working at a bank soon after the second world war, will perhaps be simply humorous to most readers but it evoked memories of my own first job.
