  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Big Joe -- Good history but somewhat biased : I loved “The Last Gunfight” by this author so I purchased this without hesitation. Overall it was very interesting and informative. The thing that bothered me is that as I read it seemed that the author spent an extraordinary amount of effort and words describing each example of American brutality or racism towards Mexican. To be sure, the same activity by Mexican people is mentioned but usually not dissected in detail. Who murdered more Mexican people in that era in cold blood, Pancho Villa or Americans? Villa was a murderous thieving thug who wrapped himself in the mantra of fighting for the little guy. The same little guys he robbed, looted, killed, and drafted into his roving band of criminals. History has seen his kind before and will again. The real head scratcher in the afterward was a somewhat snide remark about Trump and the dangerous American militias on our side of the border. Unmentioned are the cartel drug traffickers who contribute to the death of thousands of Americans every year and the for profit human trafficking that victimizes uncounted thousands of others. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from On the edge in DC -- Excellent history of a complicated story that still reverberates today : War on the Border is an excellent, lively, clearly written history of a complicated drama that still reverberates today. Our 21st century border tensions pale by comparison with the violence of the early 1900s. Add in the Germans trying to persuade Mexico to invade the US to keep it occupied and out of WWI, and the Japanese to take a swipe at California for the same reason; Mexican revolutionaries trying to goad the US into invading Mexico; and a divided Wilson administration puzzling over what the heck to do. Into this mess came Pershing and 10,000 troops chasing Pancho Villa hither and yon. Jeff Guinn does a masterful job keeping the narrative train moving and on the tracks. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Crow -- Guinn does it again : I have loved every book Jeff Guinn has written. They are deeply researched, fast paced, and always are full of great stories to support the main one. This superb book gives the reader a deep insight into the sordid history between Mexico and the US snd brings to life the fascinating snd notorious Poncho Villa. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Everett A. Mayhew Jr. -- Reads like a novel. : Not only is the diminutive book a wonderful education on US-Mexico relations before and after General Pershing's "invasion" of Mexico looking for Pancho Villia, including that Villa was far more than a bandit, but it is as readable as any novel. I'm glad I bought it. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Slippery Dick -- It's Complicated. : i did not know this whole history of the poisoned relations between Mexico and the USA and what a poor POTUS Woodrow Wilson was regarding Mexico. The whole story of Pancho Villa's raid goes far beyond what you typically read. I can see why many patriotic Mexicans still hate the USA. But there is blame to go around. The Mexican revolution of the early 20th Century was a blood bath that spilled over the border with Mexican Gringo haters murdering Americans, and Texas Rangers and wanna bees slaughtering hundreds of innocent Tejanos just because they were just there and distrusted. We are still not past these issues today. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sarah McD -- Great source for research and also a good read! : I read this book because I was doing research on one of the historic Buffalo Soldier border camps built during the Mexican Revolution, this was a great book to give me an overall understanding of the war in Mexico and all the key players. Even though I was reading this book for research it was not dry, unlike the other source material I was reading. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Ed Blair -- Fact and fiction in the book. Fiction to promote sales : Good history on Mexican government during the early 1900. A little weak on Villa. Lots of fiction and bias on the Texas Rangers. Virtually ignored Washington’s lack of border support. No comparison to how America treated Indians as the treated criminals from Mexico raiding Texas. Needs to be better informed. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from B. Christopher -- Outstanding : A great book on the 1910-1920 era of border issues with Mexico. Never knew that the USA and Mexico were that close to a declared war. Also, didn't know the extent of Germany's involvement. Highly recommended. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2021 )
